Leaps of Consciousness

3 - Not Seeing

Question Would you see something if your lifestyle, income or ego depended on not seeing it?
Answer This is why whistle-blowing is so rare.

If, for example, one worked in an industry but suspected it was a hoax, and further investigation revealed this to be the case, one would need to stand in one’s integrity (be true to oneself) and walk away from the job, career, income and lifestyle.

The gorilla image is from a famous ‘Selective Attention Test by Daniel Simons and Christopher Chabris. The viewer is asked to count how many times the white-shirted players pass the basketball.

Spoiler alert!

If you haven’t done the test, you can stop reading and click the test link above.

The answer is 15. The next question is "Did you see the gorilla?". During the game, a person in a gorilla suit walks through the players and thumps his chest in the middle. About 50% of people do not notice the gorilla because they concentrate on counting ball passes.

Blowback When people speak out, their colleagues and the establishment attack them. This is a left-brain reaction that sees criticism as an existential threat. If it is true, it threatens their survival. This happens to doctors who speak up over Covid, and those who speak up about Climate Change. Those going against the mainstream view in academia commit career suicide and lose their funding.

‘Deniers’ and ‘Conspiracy Theorists’ are common accusations.

The CIA coined the term ‘Conspiracy Theory’ in CIA Document 1035/960: 'Countering Criticism of the Warren Report', which was released under the Freedom of Information Act in 1967. The document sets out how the CIA responded to journalists questioning the official version of President Kennedy’s Assassination. It discusses ways to counteract the critics by using elite contacts (politicians and editors) and “employing propaganda assets … to refute the attacks of the critics.” You can see many of these methods alive and well today.
