Leaps of Consciousness

Materialism

Materialism holds that matter is the primary thing in the universe, and everything comes from it.

Humans are biological machines; our brains are computers, and our only purpose is survival and reproduction. Everything not physical, like qualitative feelings, experiences, consciousness, or thought, has a physical origin, even if it hasn’t been discovered yet.

Materialism has a limited worldview - how it comprehends the world works - and excludes or ignores anything outside of this as it is wrong.

Oops, not exactly an 'open-minded seeker of truth'. This is a superb example of left-brain thinking: either/or, sequential thought, no shades of grey, male, competitive and insecure. Most appropriately, the left brain considers its view as the only one that matters and ignores conclusive proof to the contrary.

Materialism denigrates, denies or ignores spiritual experiences like out-of-body and near-death experiences, healing at a distance, telepathy and clairvoyance, etc. They are often ridiculed as ‘woo-woo'.

Many people know that 'things' don’t make us happy, but they still buy them.

Why might this be? Why might we repeatedly make irrational decisions when the ‘newness’ feeling soon wears off, and the insatiable need for the next-best thing returns?

It’s funny that quantum physics shows that matter doesn’t exist. In Quantum Revelation, Paul Levy points out that matter is illusory. Only the quantum realm, where all possible states exist, is real.

There’s the reassuring adage that ‘if you think you understand quantum physics, you don’t because nobody does.’

‘Matter’ or atoms flip in and out of existence so fast it seems they are solid - like in a high-speed movie - but they aren’t. Furthermore, when an atom flips out of existence and back again it’s not the same atom.

Another basis is that ‘matter’ needs boundaries. However, since everything is energy at the quantum scale and an atom is 99.9999999% empty space, there’s no boundary separating things - There's just a continuous energy field. The ‘feeling’ of solidity is electromagnetic repulsion.

Oops, at the quantum level materialism falls apart.
